Malik’s Philly’s Phamous Cheesesteaks are Back! Malik Rose Opens New Restaurant in SA

If you lived in San Antonio during Malik Rose’s last tenure, you most likely remember Malik’s Philly’s Phamous Cheesesteaks Restaurant.  The Philly Cheesesteaks were outstanding and I mean outstanding-outstanding.  I can still taste the sodium now.  After Rose was traded from the Spurs, his two Philly Cheesesteak restaurants in San Antonio were closed down in short order.  One was in the Quarry Market and the other was off 1604 and Bandera Road, near the Silverado movie theater.

The new Malik’s restaurant is right off of West Avenue and Blanco across the street from Churchill High School near the Valero gas station.

If the cheesesteaks are anything like the old ones, you will be in heaven.  They were amazing.  Both the chicken and the beef.  Get them plain with mushrooms.  Best Cheesesteaks in San Antonio with no questions about it.  I highly, highly recommend them.

Last time around the price was under $8 per steak (I think).  I haven’t eaten at the new Malik’s restaurant yet but I can’t wait to get my first cheesesteak.

Speaking of Malik, what ever did happen between him and Pop?  One minute Malik was one of the most important Spurs on the team, a crucial component of the ’99 championship team, and significant part of the ’03 championship.  After he signed his big contract, Gregg Popovich punched a one-way ticket to New York for him.  That never made any sense and Pop being the donkey mule he is never gave any reasons on why Malik was put in the doghouse and then traded ASAP. I believe Pop was still the Spurs GM at this point so really no excuses on this one.

Malik was definitely missed.  He battled hard and did a lot of great things for the Spurs team.  Very good personality and well liked by all the fans.

Kind of hard to want him on the Spurs now seeing as how we have a new Malik-type player in Dejuan Blair.  Plus, I’m sure he probably hates Pop after the way he was unceremoniously dumped by the Spurs dictator.  The question still looms: Why?

Malik Rose in action (He was a true beast):

Does this sound like a guy you want to trade?

After he was traded to the Knicks, Malik’s career was never the same. The Knicks being the Knicks sucked and Rose’s role quickly diminished. Don’t be mistaken though, his tenure with the Spurs was a great one. Malik provided great spark off the bench and even showed he could score in bunches if need be. I remember one game in Philadelphia, he went off on his hometown team. He did a great job guarding players much bigger than him (Shaq among everyone else) and had terrific athleticism, hustle, and rebounding ability. Why Pop, why?
